The bodies of a woman and a man were found hanging in a house near the forest boundary in Medinipur, West Bengal. The victims, identified as Niyati Mandi and Samar Mandi, were discovered by a group of villagers who were gathering firewood in the nearby forest. They immediately alerted the authorities, leading to a police investigation. The bodies were found in a locked room with ropes tied around their necks. Police confirmed that both victims were related as sister-in-law and brother-in-law.
According to local sources, Niyati's husband, identified as Jantu, works in Assam and was not at home at the time of the incident. Niyati, who had a four-year-old son, had reportedly not been seen that morning. Concerned neighbors, who noticed the house door remained shut and the family unresponsive, contacted the police. Officers from Medinipur Kotwali police station arrived at the scene, forced entry into the house, and found the two bodies hanging from a beam inside the room.
The police are investigating the deaths but have not ruled out the possibility of foul play. Both bodies have been sent for post-mortem at the Medinipur Medical College Hospital. Authorities are particularly looking into whether there was any extramarital affair between the two victims, although no signs of struggle, violence, or forced entry into the house have been found. The police are also questioning neighbors to gather more information about the relationship between Niyati and Samar, as well as their behavior leading up to the incident.
The young child of the deceased, who witnessed the incident, has provided a statement to the police about what he saw. The child is currently being cared for by neighbors. The investigation is ongoing, with police working to uncover further details. The community remains in shock as the authorities seek to determine the exact cause of death and the events that led to the tragic discovery.
